The Around the bend

At first glance, this is a collection of serene landscape paintings that celebrate the awe and mystery created by atmospheric weather conditions. From wet and misty mountain lanes to dusty country roads under big skies, I aim to capture the essence of the experience of the landscape, and translate it to canvas with tonal sensitivity and a balance of softness and structure.

This series is also an exploration of life journeying and how to best equip oneself as a good traveller. My paintings reflect many recent personal challenges and learnings. Whilst making these works over the past few months I have been considering how one knows the direction when the end point is unclear, for there is no certainty regarding what is around the bend. Working through resistance and obstacles, and understanding what sustains the spirit on the way, have been other key themes.

There is a joy in taking steps towards the unknown with confidence, being open to the signposts and guides that are hints one is on the correct path. From experience, much of it lies in tapping into an inner wisdom. Each time I am faced with a blank canvas, or more confronting a half-finished painting which is not working, I have learnt to simply put my next courageous foot forward and keep walking. Grounded in that moment, being my best self, acting as a conduit for a greater knowing, I can let go of what is least helpful.

Light is a guide.

Light, breaking through dark clouds, shimmering between dancing branches, as reflected glimmers in puddles or in the mist dissipated soft glow of distant street lamps. Light represents clear thinking, inspiration, an absence of dark thoughts and confusion. Light is the thing that prevents me bumping mindlessly into myself. And light is what stops me from being driven around the bend!
